We are pleased to introduce to you two marvelous British producers and DJs who are slamming the dancefloors around the globe for more than 10 years. Today we are talking about Sam Holt and Gavin Mills also known as Copyright. They went through the “big door” when in 2005 they released three big house tunes “Bring Me Love” , “He Is” and “Time” which were immediately signed up for Defected Records. African beats, with peak-time vocals were and still is their signature on house music. Since then they are inevitable part of Defected crew. After that they just pushed more and more with releasing two “Miami In The House” compilations (one in 2007 and second in 2010) (first were sold in more than 30.000 copies around the world). In 2008, they released their first album “Voices and Visions” which featured club hits such as “Wizeman” , We Can Rise” , “Roots” and “Warrior Dance (Yema Ya)” – aired on MTV Serbia. They were respected and supported by numerous DJs and producers such as Bob Sinclar, David Guetta, Pete Tong, Roger Sanchez, Sandy Rivera, Dennis Ferrer and many more. They recently released massive vocal single “Someday” and more deep “One Track Mind” EP. We caught them between the gigs and studio sessions to ask them more about upcoming events, their philosophy on house music and future releases.
^1 Hey guys, can you tell to the fans how was Copyright born?
We met over 10 years ago through a mutual friend in London and hit it off straight away. The last ten years has flown by!
^2 How will you describe the sound of Copyright? Your style of House music?
Peaktime Vocal house and afrobeat grooves. We love to program beats and therefore our tracks are always built on the drums.
^3 You have released three big tracks in 2010, yet. What more can we expect from you in 2010? Any even bigger upcoming release? Are there any scheduled release already?
Yes this year we’ve got lots of releases planned, so keep watching! Were working a a great project at the moment for summer! It’s a joint project with Chris Lake & LYS coming on Defected. Plus we have some new vocal projects we are working on. There are remixes of our single Someday coming soon too on Defected.
^4 Where do you get all inspiration for making all that sexiest, sweetest and the finest tunes of House?
You get inspiration from everywhere… Old classic tracks, currents styles of house and everything you listen to at home or in the car. You never know when you might hear a great track to sample or cover. Or sometimes you just have an idea for a song. That can happen anytime.
When we are djing, if we’ve had a great gig its always nice to get in the studio the week after and work on music… You live off the vibes!
^5 On what equipment are you working all that in the studio?
We work off logic with a mac & we have a large collection of analog synthesizers. Plus lots of outboard EQ for when we record our vocals, things like Urie & Focusrite. But these days so much stuff is done in the computer with plug ins, its just nice to have some real equipment too.
^6 Can you tell us how is it look making of one of your tracks. Are you went to studio without any idea what you gonna make or 1st you wait to get some idea, to be inspired with something and then go?Are there any big emotions while you working and how they effect on the tracks?
Everytime its different. We usually start with the beats and then work from there. Get a good groove going and then build the tracks from there. We will work on the music and then get vocalists involved later… The average record will take around 3 months… Sometime longer! Its always fun in the studio… Hopefully that comes across in the music!
^7 Behind studio, we also know that you’re working as DJs, too. Tell us something more about your upcoming gigs. Any big one? Any chance to see you soon in Serbia?
We have gigs everywhere coming up… France, Germany, Spain, Turkey, Greece!! Indonesia, London… Basically we are always travellling or in the studio! We played recently in Serbia! It was DOPE!!! Hopefully we will be back soon…!
^8 What do you like to do more, playing or making the tracks?
Both are FUN!
^9 WMC just passed, whats your thoughts about it? Biggest release of it? Which tracks worked good for you?
WMC IS DOPE. It s really great fun and a great place to see all of our friends from round the world. We’ve been going for many years now and its always a highlight of the year. Biggest release ? Too many to mention… SO many parties and so many records!
^10 What’s your thoughts about music blogs, sites and forums? About illegal music sharing at all? Are there more positive stuffs about it or negative?
Well the whole digital thing really killed us a few years ago when we were selling vinyl. A lot of young people just assume music is free. That’s fine but when you actually make the music its makes a big difference. We don’t share digital files and we never download movies or music from illegal sources. I guess you should practice what you preach.
Legal downloads are starting to get decent sales, so that’s a positive thing. But people sharing music freely on forums should stop sometimes to think. Someone made this. Some one invested time and love to make this. Maybe I should spend €1 !
^11 What’s your five favorite tracks at the moment?
1. Copyrig ht – Circuit Break
2. Shapeshifters – Helter Skelter
3. Dennis Ferrer – Hey Hey
4. NuRhytmix – Shakedown
5. DJ Gregory – Vem Rebola
^12 Now it’s time for “one-shoot” questions. I tell one word and you tell your association on it.
Serbia – GOOOOD TIMES !
MTV – OUR INTERNATIONAL HOTEL FRIEND
Dennis Ferrer – HEY HEY
Love – IS THE MESSAGE
^13 Any last shoutous for MTV crowd, house people or friends/family?
We send a massive shout to all our people in Serbia!
