David Penn has had a reputation as a stand out DJ and producer in his native Spain for some time now, but it is only over the last year or so that the rest of the world has started to take note. And not a moment too soon; David’s killer remixes and productions and upfront, no-holds-barred DJing style have set him apart from many of his peers as a true rising star in the House world, and 2009 looks set to be his busiest and biggest year to date. We caught up with him to talk ‘guajolote’…

Describe your background ?

I started to study piano and song writting at the age of 9 and after that, I studied jazz, bossa, latin rhythms…I was influenced by Stevie Wonder, Earth Wind & Fire, Michael Jackson and later, in the 90´s the classic house masters such as Frankie Knuckles, Masters at Work, Danny Tenaglia, Roger Sanchez and David Morales.

Describe your DJ and production style…

I like music that you can remember; every track needs to be special and different from others, and I try to include harmonies in most of my tracks, not just beats and basslines. In my life I have made many different types of electronic music. Sometimes more soulful, sometimes stronger but I’ve always tried to move with the times. I dont want to become bored, so I am always looking at different types of sounds and beats, but always with a classic house touch.

Will you be in Ibiza this summer?

Sure, I’ll be doing four dates in Pacha – Defected on Saturdays June 20th, July 25th and August 1st & 15th. I am really glad to be there, is one of my dreams to be part of it.

You have remixed a lot of tracks for several DJs. Which one of these remixes did you enjoy the most when producing it?

Maybe my remixes of Danny Clark & Jay Benham ‘Wondrous’ and Sandy Rivera ‘I Can’t Stop’ because specifically asked to do them. I really enjoyed working on both of these records because the original material was of such high quality.

How do you choose the tracks you’re going to remix?

I only accept a remix if I really feel that I can do something good and different with the parts of the track. In my remixes I make a different arrangement; normally I only use the vocals and a few of the original parts.

How do you proceed when you create a track?

Depends, sometimes I have an idea that comes from my sets, or from a feeling that I have when I am in a party. Others I start with some beats and sometimes with a harmony. Everytime is different.

Who’s next on your list of collaborators?

I have a new single coming with Peter Gelderblom called Miracle Of Love’ and I am starting projects with ATFC, Mastiksoul and DJ Chus

What are your predictions for this year?

That it will probably be the most busiest year of my career! I have many dates and many requests for remixes but I want to focus on my next singles as David Penn and Montilla principally

What does the future hold for David Penn?

I hope to continue as I am now, making the music that I really want and playing around the world with the support of the public and the DJs. That’s enough!

I was a bit sick people, some flue shit… But I’m back with new Q-Pack! Firstly, I am a bit sick & tired of Swedish House Mafia (except Ingrosso ). In this ocean of good tracks I see that we are repeating too much with Axwell/Angello and others. Don’t get me wrong they are all amazing producers but as someone said, nothing new from their studio… Anyways I made this summer pack with summer tunes but with also some deeper/electro sound. Hope you will like it!

^1 Alex Gaudino and Steve Edwards – Take Me Down (to the Water) (Nicola Fasano Southbeach Remix) / Club Summer House -Steve Edwards team-uped with Alex Gaudino and made this lovely summer tune! You gonna love the trumpets, guitars, pumping rhythm and everything that fits in summer vibe! 7.5

^2 Baggi Begovic & Groovenatics – The Music (Original Mix) / Deep House – I absolutely adore Baggi Begovic’s tracks! We gonna try to post more of deep house tracks. Great bassline with amazing vocal and thrilling synths. This is one huge tune! Pleyed by Roger Sanchez too. 8/10

^3 DJ Gregory & Gregor Salto – Con Alegria (Main Mix) / Latino House – DJ Gregory & Gregor Salto are always ready with their latino tribal tracks. This one is released on Defected recently. Huge tune people, supported by Copyright! It’s just makes you move even if you are sitting. 7.5/10

^4 DJ Rob, Rivero – 4ever (Victor Magan Remix) / Club Summer House – Victor Magan did new remix of this summer hit which was released last year. Tribal beats laying over the beach is always must-have! Vocal is truely inspiring with Santana’s guitar. Personally I prefer original but this one is good too. 6.5/10

^5 Fedo Feat Ask – Gypsy (Morimba Mix) / Club Summer House – New Fedo tune with a bit of ethno gypsy sound with marimba’s polyphonic melody. This one is pure trumpet instrumental, but u can check also vocal version. Anyways truely summer track! 7/10

^6 Hagenaar & Albrecht feat. Rachel Noiz – In And Out (Original Mix) / Club Summer House – You already know how big is this new re-work made by Hagenaar & Albrecht. No need to explain this summer stomper with beautiful guitars and classic “In & Out” lyrics! 8.5/10

^7 Milton Channels & Modjo – Hey Lady (Ingo & Simon Steur ‘My Lady’ Edit) / Progressive, Tribal House – This one is hugeeee, I wanted to post this one earlier but I forgot! “Lady” always remind me of summer nights! This is one great summer booty for all you summer DJs! 7/10

^8 Pryda vs Musikk – Summer Lift (Danny Francis Bootleg) / Progressive Summer House – I’ve got this track for some time now, but I think this mash-up should be posted now when the summer is on! Really nicely laid vocals on this piano stomper! 7/10

^9 R.I.O. – After The Love (Dave Kurtis Remix) – Club Summer House / I know this R.I.O. vocals are a bit cheesy, but this is really nice breakbit track, with almost identical bassline and rhythm like “Steve Angello & Laidback Luke – Be”. Anyways I played it and people react surprisingly nice on this one. 6.5

^10 Ritmo Playaz Feat. Inusa Dawuda (Alvaro Remix) – Club Summer House / Personally this is my no.1 summer tune. Alvaro did great remix. Girls gonna love this one if you play it. Great vocal track with balearic guitars. 7.5/10

^11 We Love – Right In The Night ft Jade Esteban (Galo Remix) – Latin House / Really nice latin version of this classy tune. Love the female vocals on this one with harmonic melody on top. 7/10

^12 Yasmeen – Ready Or Not (Copyright Club Mix) – Deep House / This is tune of the week! Produced by Copyright, Yasmeen sing it beautifully! Absolutely amazing release for Strictly Rhythm! So simple and so effective rhythm! Can’t bear to play it for weekend! \o/ 8.5/10
